Known for its cotton sarees, West Bengal also has an elaborate offering for silks. The district of Murshidabad and the temple town of Bishnupur in Bankura district are the major hubs for silk saree weaving. Both Murshidabad and Bishnupur are of historical significance and the rich culture and heritage of these places get reflected in their weaves too. These weaving clusters together offer the very opulent Baluchari Silk saree, Murshidabad Silk saree, Bishnupuri silk saree and Tussar saree. Except for Tussar sarees all the other silk sarees are woven from mulberry silk produced in the district of Bankura and the neighbouring district of Malda. Bishnupuri silk is pure silk and forms the base for Baluchari Silk sarees. Both Bishnupuri silk and Murshidabad silk sarees are commonly adorned with hand block prints, hand painting, hand batik and acid printing. These sarees are very soft, light-weighted and easy to drape. These sarees are easy to maintain and are perfect as office wear or casual social dos.
