Begumpuri sarees are named after a small town called Begumpur in Hooghly district of West Bengal. Begumpur weaving cluster is an ultimate revival story in the Indian handloom space. Traditionally, the weavers here, were engaged in weaving simple sarees in solid colours with Mathaparh (plain border without any ornamentation) and occasional Nakshaparh design, using coarser cotton yarn. With the State Government’s effort along with the Weaver Service Center, new techniques and design patterns were introduced to the weavers in the recent past. And this gave birth to the current version of Begumpuri sarees which witnessed huge success. Begumpuri sarees are loosely woven in bright colour combination with a distinct extra weft serrated pattern in body and pallu. These sarees are light-weighted, pure cotton that do not need frequent starching and drape like a dream.
