Kantha is one of the oldest form of embroidery often practiced by rural women in eastern regions of Indian sub-continent. The word “Kantha” in Bengali means embroidered quilt. This embroidery is characterized by the ‘running stitch’ that is used to adorn the quilts with artistic embroidery. Kantha stitch reinforces the fabric and creates lines, fields of colour and motifs. Sarees with kantha embroidery are typically made of pure silk, tussar and cotton. Depending upon the intricacy of embroidered patterns, a saree takes a few weeks to several months to prepare. This in turn determines the price of the saree.
